About 30 minutes by car from downtown Portland, Oregon City is the county seat of Clackamas County. Established in 1829 by the Hudson’s Bay Company, in 1845 it became the first U.S. city west of the Rocky Mountains to be incorporated, so he town is loaded with amazing historic architecture.
According to the 2010 census, the city population was 31,859. Oregon City is located on the Willamette River near the southern limits of the Portland metropolitan area. The town is situated above Willamette Falls.
Oregon City was known for many years as the home of large paper mills. The town was the site of the first Roman Catholic archdiocese in the western United States, when the diocese of Oregon City, established in 1846.
Oregon City was the capital of the Oregon Territory from the time it was first established in 1848, until the capital was moved to Salem in the year 1851.
